We are absolutely thrilled to announce that we have won Employer of the Year at the 2020 Devon and Somerset Law Society Legal Awards! This is a fantastic way to round off a very challenging year and we are delighted that we and our staff have been recognised for all their hard work – after all, it’s our staff who make Cartridges Law such a unique (and award winning) place to work.

We are especially proud of our staff members, past and present, who were recognised for their outstanding achievements. Faye Newberry was Highly Commended in the Legal Aid Lawyer of the Year category, and Leanne Yendell, who recently moved on to a new role, was Highly Commended in the Rising Star category.

“We have built a reputation as a firm for being dedicated to our staff and for our attitude to employment, and for our efforts to be recognised is absolutely wonderful.”

Nicky Mein, Managing Partner

Managing Partner Nicky Mein said, “We have built a reputation as a firm for being dedicated to our staff and for our attitude to employment, and for our efforts to be recognised is absolutely wonderful.”

Nicky added, “We aim to foster a supportive and positive working atmosphere, understanding that our staff members have a life outside of the office. We are a proud part of the warm St Thomas / Cowick Street community, and many of our staff members dedicate their own free time to local charities or initiatives, such as Ride On, which aims to get more people on affordable bikes. We are really proud of the community links we have built and we are looking forward to seeing where our people take us over the years to come.”

Partner Penny Scott said, “We understand that our staff are people, not robots. We therefore ensure that any member of staff can talk to the partners about any concerns they may have, give extra care when personal issues arise, and encourage our staff to get involved with the running and success of the business. We know that law is a stressful career, so we have put measures in place to mitigate stress and improve the working experience of all our staff members: from offering free back and hand massages throughout the working day, to the garden space we built for anyone who needs a break.”

Penny added, “The COVID-19 pandemic has also highlighted the need for employer flexibility, something which was already part of our normal working practice. With around 30 members of staff we have implemented at least 16 different working patterns. We firmly believe that the support we give our staff members is an investment in our business, and so this will remain a high priority for us as we (hopefully) move towards a more ‘normal’ future.”

We’d like to thank every one of our staff members one last time for your contributions towards us being awarded Employer of the Year at the 2020 DASLS Awards. We’re so proud to be a firm which embraces diversity, which is committed to inclusive practice, and which fosters a supportive and warm office atmosphere. We’re now looking to the future: to constantly moving forward, to constantly improving our staff experience, and to helping our local community however we can.
