Long-awaited government review of cuts to civil legal aid welcomed

06 November 2017

News that the government is to review the Legal Aid, Sentencing and Punishment of Offenders Act 2012 (LASPO) was today welcomed by the Law Society of England and Wales.

Cartridges Law has continued to offer legal aid for housing and family law cases which stayed ‘in scope’ after LASPO became law.

We’ve always criticised LASPO. We believe it restricts access to justice for people who need to protect their legal rights but don’t have the money to pay lawyers privately. We have seen with our own eyes the destructive impact of LASPO on the justice system. We therefore welcome this review, to which we’ll be contributing – including via Penny Scott’s role as chair of The Family Law Committee of The Law Society.

The Society has as one of its key aims the protection of access to justice for all.
